Rehabilitation


People who experience serious vision loss including total blindness can learn how to use their other senses as well as special equipment and techniques to continue to function as independently as they wish. The Rehabilitation Services Department of Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh is an administrative grouping of a variety of services whose purpose is to help people learn to function without vision or with severely reduced vision.

Within Rehabilitation Services, there are four areas of service:

Low Vision Services evaluates each client's remaining vision and a Low Vision Optometrist prescribes devices designed to enhance what the individual is able to see.  A Low Vision Therapist provides instruction in the use of the devices prescribed.

Link button for Personal Adjustmennt to Blindness

Photo of client using kitchen facilities.The Personal Adjustment to Blindness Training Program is a residential rehabilitation program designed to provide individuals without vision or with severely impaired vision, the personal skills needed to be able to function as independently as possible.  Rehabilitation counseling is an integral part of the program.

The Access Technology Center uses state-of-the-art technology to provide blind and visually impaired individuals with evaluation and training designed to help them select the best computer and access equipment for their needs and to learn to use the specific equipment and software chosen.

Link button for Summer Programs for Teens

Summer Programs for Teens includes a College Prep Program designed to help visually impaired college bound high school juniors and seniors prepare for the transition from high school to college, a Career and Community Adjustment Program to help visually impaired high school students learn about the world of work and develop personal and social skills and a Summer Adjustment to Blindness Program designed to provide visually impaired students with personal skills training to allow them to function as independently as possible.
