Personal Adjustment to Blindness
is a residential rehabilitation program tailored to help each
participant learn to live with vision loss. The pace and length of the program
varies for each person, but a typical training
experience lasts 8 to 12 weeks. Medical and nighttime staff are available seven days a week.
Classroom instruction takes place Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
and addresses daily living skills,
orientation and mobility, communication skills, computer training, leisure time
activities, and the use of low vision aids when appropriate. Personal and vocational
counseling are also key components of the rehabilitation process.
In
addition to hands-on instruction and teaching techniques for adapting routine
equipment for use without vision, clients are also introduced to the
latest specialized adaptive equipment for persons who are visually
impaired.
The
Pennsylvania Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services sponsors most clients
for training. Other funding services and limited scholarships may be
available. Enrollment is open throughout the year.
