Specially trained
optometrists provide low vision services at Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh.
They include a thorough eye examination, an evaluation of the patient's
remaining vision and the prescription of optical devices, such as
high-powered spectacles and magnifiers, as well as electronic devices to
enhance the images a person can see. Instruction on how to correctly
use the devices is also provided by Certified Low Vision Therapists.
When possible, low vision
aids are loaned to individuals so that they may evaluate the effectiveness
of each device in their own environment before making a purchase.
Private health insurance
or Medicare may cover the cost of examinations. A social worker can
help with determining funding sources for payment of training and
equipment.
